Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Torres,Viviana O.; Montagna,Thiago S.; Fernandes,Wedson D.; Antonialli-Junior,William F..
Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). This study describes some aspects of the colony cycle of the Neotropical social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis, from data obtained under field conditions. Our results showed that the colony cycle in M. consimilis is annual and asynchronous in relation to the months of the year. The colonies remained active for approximately eight months. Most of the abandonments were associated with natural causes, and were most frequent in the pre-emergence stage. The nests were constructed preferentially in man-made structures, especially in sites protected from direct sunlight and rain. Colony foundation was either by haplometrosis or pleometrosis, being the first form predominant.

Diversity and community structure of social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) in three ecosystems in itaparica island, Bahia State, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Santos,Gilberto M. de M.; Bichara Filho,Carlos C.; Resende,Janete J.; Cruz,Jucelho D. da; Marques,Oton M..
We studied the structure and composition of communities of social wasps associated with the three insular ecosystems: mangrove swamp, the Atlantic Rain Forest and the 'restinga'- lowland sandy ecosystems located between the mountain range and the sea. Three hundred and ninety-one nests of 21 social wasp species were collected. The diversity of wasps found in each ecosystem was significantly correlated to the diversity of vegetation in each of the three physiognomies, (r² = 0.85; F(1.16) = 93.85; P < 0. 01). The Tropical Atlantic Forest physiognomy had higher species richness (18 species), followed by the restinga (16 species) and the mangrove (8 species) ecosystems.

Diversity of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) in Cerrado biome of the southern of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Simões,Matheus H.; Cuozzo,Mariana D.; Frieiro-Costa,Fernando A..
An inventory of social wasps in Cerrado biome of the southern of the state of Minas Gerais was performed. A comparison between field and Riparian Forest areas was made in relation to species richness; correlations between diversity, sample methods and environmental factors were conducted. A total of 32 species was registered and Polybia fastidiosuscula de Saussure, 1854 was the most abundant species. The higher richness was in the Cerrado Field, as well as the highest diversity index. The temperature and rainfall had significant correlation with species richness and a significant variation in richness between dry and wet seasons was observed. Polybia fastidiosuscula was more abundant in the Riparian Forest during the dry season and in the Cerrado Field...

Diversity of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in three fragments of semideciduous seasonal forest in the northwest of São Paulo State, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Gomes,Bruno; Noll,Fernando B..
Human exploitation of the forest in the northwest of São Paulo State has generated enormous fragmentation of that forest. Such disturbance has reduced the populations of insects in general. This work was a survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae; Polistinae) in three areas in different stages of regeneration: Paulo de Faria - SP (435 ha), Pindorama - SP (128 ha) and Neves Paulista - SP (1 ha). These three areas were chosen for comparative purposes. To capture the wasps, it was used: active collecting with attractant liquid (solution of water, salt and sugar) with the aid of a dorsal spray bag. During the period from July to December 2006, 414 social wasps were collected in Paulo de Faria, constituting seven species belonging to four genera; 111...

Diversity of wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata: Vespidae) along an altitudinal gradient of Atlantic Forest in Itatiaia National Park, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ribeiro,Daniele Guedes; Silvestre,Rogerio; Garcete-Barrett,Bolívar R..
ABSTRACT Surveying the diversity of stinging wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) provides an important information base to assist in biodiversity conservation and the management of forest reserves, as wasps depend on and maintain the population balance of several other groups of insects. In accordance, this paper presents an altitudinal survey of wasps (Hymenoptera, Aculeata, Vespidae) in Itatiaia National Park, Brazil, which is a protected area covered by Atlantic Forest in a mountainous landscape, with altitudes ranging between 540 and 2791 metres above sea level. Six altitudinal zones were sampled with entomological net, and the abundance and diversity of the species were indicated by zones. Field sampling took 288 h of discontinuous activity, which was...

Foraging patterns in a nocturnal swarm-founding wasp, Apoica flavissima van der Vecht (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Neotropical Entomology
Nascimento,Fabio S.; Tannure-Nascimento,Ivelize C..
Foraging behaviour has a remarkable significance to colonies of social insects since it is directly related to the supply of food, water, and pulp. Social wasps of the genus Apoica Lepeletier are primarily nocturnal, but studies concerning the general aspects related to this habit are still scarce. This study showed that the rates of foraging flights were higher during the full moon and last quarter moon phases. Frequencies of arrival and departure were correlated with time and temperature at night. The results suggest that the moonlight is an important component to general activities in this genus.

Guia de identificação dos ninhos de vespas sociais (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) na Reserva Ducke, Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil Rev. Bras. entomol.

Morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Tanaka Junior,Getulio Minoru; Soleman,Raduan Alexandre; Noll,Fernando Barbosa.
Morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini). The Neotropical swarm-founding wasps, Epiponini, range from the absence of morphological differentiation between castes to highly distinct castes. We measured eight body parts of females of two colonies of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure, 1854). ANOVA and Discriminant Analysis evidenced significant differences between castes, as previously observed by other authors for other species of Epiponini. However, some females previously categorized as queens, were actually workers, supported by our statistic analyses. These individuals showed intermediate morphological features between queens and workers, having...

Morphological studies on castes of Protopolybia chartergoides (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini) observed in colonies during male production stage Rev. Bras. entomol.
Felippotti,Giovanna Tocchini; Noll,Fernando Barbosa; Mateus,Sidnei.
Social wasps are important for the study of social behavior evolution because their colonies present different degrees of caste differentiation, from morphologically similar to highly conspicuous, associated with the occasional presence of intermediate females, which bears developed ovaries but no insemination. In the Polistinae, depending on the taxon, such differentiation can be discreet or conspicuous. This work intended to study morphological and physiological differences between castes in Protopolybia chartergoides by using morphometric analyses associated with multivariate statistical analyses and physiological evaluations from females' ovarian development. Results evidence low morphological and physiological differences among the castes in P....

Promotion of thermoregulatory insulation in nests of neotropical wasps by building extra-combs with empty cells Neotropical Entomology
Hozumi,Satoshi; Kudô,Kazuyuki; Zucchi,Ronaldo.
We examined the hypotheses that the empty combs of Polybia occidentalis Olivier (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) nest insulate the inside of the nest. To examine this hypotheses, two kinds of temperature measurements were carried out: 1) with the outer comb of the nest intact (Control) and 2) removed (Treatment), using a large and a small nest. In the large nest, the daily nest temperatures (outer part, Tn1; inner part, Tn2) in Control were lower by 0.6°C (Tn1) and 1.2°C (Tn2) than those in Treatment, because of a higher ambient temperature (Ta) throughout temperature assessment in Treatment. However, the excess temperature (Tn - Ta) in Control was higher than that in Treatment. The value was higher by 0.7°C at Tn1 and 0.1°C at Tn2. In the small nest, the excess...

Reconsideration of the taxonomy of the Ropalidia malayana-complex (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Naturalis
Kojima, J..
The taxonomy of the Ropalidia malayana-complex is reconsidered after studying mainly the specimens examined by van der Vecht (1941, 1962) and housed in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden. The complex is shown to consist of three species: R. malayana (Cameron, 1903) [= R. parvimaculata (Cameron, 1907), = R. delicata Dover, 1931], R. erythrospila (Cameron, 1908) and R. pseudomalayana spec. nov. The last species is described from Borneo.

Surveying neotropical social wasps: an evaluation of methods in the "Ferreira Penna" research station (ECFPn), in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil (Hym., Vespidae, Polistinae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Silveira,Orlando Tobias.
A survey of social wasps was made in the area of the "Ferreira Penna" Research Station (ECFPn) in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil. Traditional collecting methods as the use of Malaise traps and the search for individuals and colonies of wasps along trails in the forest and by river margins, were applied in a more systematized fashion. Seventy-nine species belonging to 18 genera were discovered within a discontinuous period of 52 days of collecting. Angiopolybia pallens, Polybia liliacea, and several Agelaia species were the most frequently collected species. Active search for wasps in the forest and by river margins was far more efficient than Malaise traps regarding the discovery of polistine species.

Taxonomy of the Ropalidia flavopicta-complex (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Naturalis
Kojima, J..
The taxonomy of the "species" treated as subspecies of Ropalidia flavopicta (= R. flavopicta-complex) by van der Vecht (1962) were reexamined. Four forms in the complex other than the species in the Philippine Islands are concluded to be valid species: R. flavopicta (Smith), R. javanica van der Vecht, R. ochracea van der Vecht, and R. ornaticeps (Cameron). The two subspecies of the Philippine species, R. flavobrunnea van der Vecht, namely lapiniga Kojima and iracunda Kojima, are sunk into the nominate species. A new species is described based on a female listed under "R. flavopicta flavobrunnea " by van der Vecht (1962).
